Volume Types

Every piece of data has its lifecycle. With that in mind, we’ve created several volume types according to different usage and needs: Hot, Warm, Immutable and Archival. You can also define other properties, like storage capacitydownload quotainterfaces and retention policies. You can even choose the cloud providers by brand or geographical location.

Hot Volumes

Optimised for recurrent storage and sharing (multiples writes, deletes, and downloads). This Volume Type allows file versioning and has a download time (for files that are not cached in a specific device) in the order of milliseconds for the first byte (TTFB).

Examples of Uses

  • Team files;
  • Active legal processes;
  • Current year’s accounting documentation.

Warm Volumes

Optimised for storage of editable data, accessed less frequently. This volume allows two temporal versions per file, and creates each version every 5 minutes. This volume is ideal for integration with several backup services, such as Veeam, Arcserve, NetBackup, or RMAN. Each file stored in this Volume Type has a 30 days minimum storage duration charge, meaning that Vawlt will only free up the space occupied by that file after such period, even if the file is deleted beforehand. The download time (for files that are not cached in a specific device) in the order of milliseconds for the first byte (TTFB).

Examples of Uses

  • Offsite backups;
  • Disaster recovery.

Immutable Volumes

Optimised for files that don’t require changes upon storage (write once, download often). This volume actively blocks file edition by any user, becoming a strong tool to fight ransomware attacks.

  • Call centre calls;
  • Medical imagery and records;
  • Static documents (e.g. signed contracts).

Archival Volumes

Optimised for files that are stored for long periods of time and rarely read (write once, unlikely to read). Each file stored in this Volume Type has a 180 days minimum storage duration charge, meaning that Vawlt will only free up the space occupied by that file after such period, even if the file is deleted beforehand. Files stored in this Volume Type are offline and therefore a Fetch operation must occur before reading files that are not cached in a specific device. For those files, the download time can take up to 5 hours after a Fetch is applied.

Examples of Uses

  • Logs from switches, firewalls, etc;
  • Closed legal processes;
  • Past years’ accounting documentation.
